Yarmouth High School’s Top Students:

Emelia von Saltza is the daughter of Carl von Saltza and Susan Spector. She sailed for Yarmouth’s sailing team and sang in the school Chamber Choir. The spring of her junior year she studied abroad in Central America. This fall, Emelia will be attending Pitzer College in California where she plans on majoring in International and Intercultural Studies.

Madison Hynes is the daughter of Kevin and Lynn Hynes. Madison participated in cross country running, nordic skiing, and crew during all four years of high school. She was the leader of the Global Action Coalition for the past two years and helped organize yoga classes for students during her senior year. She also was a member of the Student Senate and a liaison to the School Committee. She was selected for the U.S-Indonesia Leadership Program. Next year, Madison will be attending Boston College to study international relations and hopes to work in the non-profit sector.

Emma Maierhofer is the daughter of Robert Maierhofer and Beverly Strzok and sister to Maddy Maierhofer. Emma has played volleyball for four years, winning two state titles and has been a part of the Playmakers Drama Club for two years. She has worked at Pat’s Pizza for two years and now works at Estabrook’s as well. Emma will be attending the University of Vermont in the fall.

Nicole LoConte is the daughter of Julie Richardson. She came to Yarmouth High School as a senior, where she continued to earn High Honor Roll every semester. She is the Class of 2014 Salutatorian. Nicole is taking a gap year in order to acquire job experience and save up money for college. She plans on going to Southern Maine Community College to major in English Education in the fall of 2015. She hopes to continue her education at USM and teach English in South Korea.

Travis Hamre, son of Marty and Darren Hamre, will be attending St. Lawrence University in the fall to study Economics and Business, as well as run on the indoor & outdoor track teams. He is an Eagle Scout, member of the Robotics Team, Chamber Choir, Jazz Band, and church Mission Groups. He was a Varsity Soccer player and Captain of the Indoor & Outdoor Track Teams: school record holder and WMC All-Conference team selection.

Liam Thompson is the son of Karen McKenna and James Thompson. Liam played lacrosse for four years and was on the indoor track team for 2 years. This fall, Liam will be attending Wesleyan University in Connecticut where he plans to study Psychology or Neuroscience.

Chapin Dorsett is the daughter of Mark and Sharon Dorsett. Chapin raced on the alpine ski team for four years and was on the crew, cross country, and outdoor track teams. She was a founding member of the Book Club and wrote for the school newspaper. Chapin will be taking a gap year to backpack around South and Central America.

Ariel Potter is the daughter of Ben and Dina Potter.  Ariel was Captain of the YHS Girls Ice Hockey team for the past two years, and was the leading scorer for all four years. She played for the Portland Junior Pirates, advancing to USA Hockey Nationals twice. She is certified in Teaching English as a Foreign Language and taught English to immigrants in Portland and to University students in Bolivia.  Ariel was Student Director/Volunteer for the Adaptive Skate Program for six years. She was on Student Senate and Model UN for four years.  Ariel will be attending Colorado College.

Madeleine Anderson is the daughter of Helen Anderson and Scott Anderson and a big sister to Eli Anderson. Madeleine was a member of Math Team and Robotics for four years, and especially enjoyed her studies in math, science, and art. She played volleyball in the fall, rowed for the spring crew team, and continued her Scottish Highland dancing year round. Madeleine taught swimming at the YMCA throughout high school. She will be attending Carnegie Mellon University in the fall where she plans to major in either Mechanical or Civil Engineering.

Madelyne Maierhofer is the daughter of Beverly and Robert Maierhofer. Maddy played volleyball for three years and has been a part of the Maine Juniors Volleyball League for three years, too. She has played flute in the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble for eight years. Maddy will be attending Boston College in the fall where she plans to earn her teaching degree.

Grace O’Donnell is the daughter of Peter and Mary O’Donnell. She has been an active member of her high school community since freshman year participating in class council, basketball, lacrosse, clipper buddies and pit band for the high school musicals. Grace has been a member of the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble since 7th grade. She is thankful to all her teachers and coaches for their kindness, support, encouragement, and dedication through the years. Grace will be attending Trinity College in the fall.

Amelia French is the daughter of Jed and Gretchen French. Amelia participated in the Playmakers Drama Club for four years and was Co-President of the club. She was president of Chamber Choir and Young Liberals, as well as Vice President and Co-Founder of the Filmmaking Club. Amelia wrote Yarmouth’s One Act, Josephine’s Stories (adapted from Rudyard Kipling’s Just So Stories) which won the Maine State Drama Festival. She was recently featured as a student playwright in Portland Stage’s Little Festival of the Unexpected. This fall, Amelia will be attending Tisch School of the Arts at New York University where she will study at the Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing.

Molly Maguire is the daughter of Kathy Ray and Paul Maguire. She participated in Varsity Cross-Country and Nordic Skiing for three years each, serving as Captain of both teams her senior year. She was also a member of the Varsity Lacrosse team for three years. She was a three-year contributor to the Student Senate, serving as Vice President her senior year. Molly received the Saint Anselm College Book Award, was recognized as a US Lacrosse Academic All-American, and is an AP Scholar. Molly will be attending Davidson College in the fall where she plans to study science.

Abigail Belisle Haley is the daughter of Kevin Haley and Lisa Belisle. She will be attending Providence College in the fall and intends to be an art history major. Abby played Varsity Lacrosse and Soccer throughout high school as well as competed for the swim team, and also swam with the Casco Bay Stripers for 10 years. Both a class council member and Student Senate member, Abby has been very engaged in all school activities. She is very grateful for the opportunities Yarmouth High School has afforded her and would love to come back and teach there one day.

Melissa Levinson is the daughter of Michael and Amy Levinson. She is a recipient of the Thesil Morlan Award for the Advancement of Social Justice and the College of the Atlantic Book Award for Humanitarian Awareness. She is Captain of the Varsity Softball team, the Chair of the Academic Committee for the Student Senate, and the Head Delegate for Model United Nations. Melissa is a participant in Seeds of Peace and has earned an intermediate certification in Arabic. She plans to attend NYU Abu Dhabi next year to study Middle Eastern Studies with a concentration on peace strategies.

Grace King is the daughter of Andrew and Janet King. Grace played golf for the Clippers for 4 years serving as Vice-Captain and earning Academic All Honors her senior year.  She was a member of Class Council throughout high school, serving as Class President her sophomore, junior and senior years. Grace participated in Model UN and was an intern in Congresswoman Chellie Pingree’s Portland office. Grace will be attending St. Lawrence University in the fall where she will be playing Division III golf for the Saints and plans to major in Global Studies.

Meredith McLoon is the daughter of Chris and Cindy McLoon. She played ice hockey all four years of high school as a defender. She has worked after school at the Yarmouth Veterinary Center for two years. She will attend George Washington University in the fall where she plans to explore a few different subjects before choosing a major.

Emma Peterson is the daughter of Gail Dyer and Jim Peterson. She received the Connecticut College Book Award and has contributed over 185 hours to community service. She was Captain and played four years on the Varsity Field Hockey team. She was chosen for the WMC Field Hockey All-Conference First and Second Teams, as well as the WMC All-Academic Team. She also skied four years on the Nordic ski team and was on the WMC All-Academic Team. Emma is a musician, playing flute and piano, and is also an avid equestrian. Emma will be attending Wheaton College and plans to play field hockey.

Julia Beatty is the daughter of Scott Beatty and Kate Huntress. Julia played volleyball for four years, playing as an all-around hitter. She was a member of Yarmouth Playmakers Drama Club and part of the technical theater crew on the 2014 State Championship Winning One Act play. She also audited Chinese language classes at Bowdoin College throughout high school. Julia will be attending the University of Vermont in the fall where she plans to double major in Chinese and Social Work.

Olivia Shay is the daughter of Mardie Weldon and Michael Shay. Olivia played field hockey and Varsity Tennis for four years and served as Captain of the tennis team for two years. She was a member of Model UN, Maine Youth Court, and Outing Club and volunteered with Firehouse Arts, Safe Passage, and Merrill Memorial Library Arts. She also volunteered with the Youth Field Hockey Camp, the DaVinci Science and Arts Camp, and the Back to Basics Maliseet Summer Youth Program. Olivia will be attending Northwestern University in the fall where she plans to major in Psychology.

Jack Taylor is the son of Jim and Beth Taylor. He has been a member of the Yarmouth Nordic Ski team for four years.  Jack has rowed for the Yarmouth Rowing Club during the fall and spring seasons since his freshman year and served as a team Captain his senior year. Jack will attend Davidson College in the fall where he plans to pursue a liberal arts degree.

Alex Coroi is the son of Bogdan and Laura Coroi. He has been involved with Varsity Tennis for the entirety of his high school career and is excited at the prospect of continuing tennis in his higher education. He has also been a member of the VEX Robotics team at the high school for the past four years and was the founder of the VEX Robotics team at the local middle school. Alex will attend the Honors College at the University of Pittsburgh with plans to major in Physics along with doing a Pre-Medical study.

Jake Griffin is the son of Michael Griffin and Janet Lohmann. Jake attended Yarmouth High School for his freshman and sophomore years, but during his junior year, Jake spent the year abroad in Karis, Finland through the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. After a year abroad, Jake returned to finish his senior year at YHS. During his time at Yarmouth, Jake skied on the nordic ski team for three years and ran cross country during his senior year. Jake will be attending Bowdoin College in the fall where he plans to major in Physics.

Grace Mallett is the daughter of Caroline and Lee Mallett. She is an AP Scholar with Honors, received the Smith Book Award, Latin Award (9,10,11) and 2014 WMC Citizenship Award, and was the 2013 Forecaster Fall Female Athlete of the Year. She was on the volleyball team (four year varsity; captain; 2011 and 2013 Class B State Champion; 2013 All State and All Academic First Teams; Portland Press Herald 2013 All State First Team), and the varsity swim, indoor track and lacrosse teams (WMC All Academic First Team for volleyball and indoor track). Grace participated in Youth Court, Student Senate, Model UN, and Maine Adaptive Sports. She will attend Bowdoin College.

Julia Anastos is the daughter of Peter and Lori Anastos. She was a member of Student Senate for four years and the Executive Council her senior year. She also served on the Maine Youth Court, Model UN, and the Debate Team. Julia served as a delegate at Girls State and was a United States Senate Page. She played softball for four years as a second basemen. Julia plays guitar and piano and was a member of a bluegrass group. She received the Barnard College Book Award. Julia will attend Georgetown University in the fall majoring in Political Economy.

Benjamin Decker, the son of Melanie and Byrne Decker, is the class Valedictorian. He received the Robert W. Boyd Award, the Ruth B. Plummer Award, the Harvard College Book Award, the Spanish IV Award, and the AP US and European History Awards. He is an AP Scholar and a National Merit Scholarship Commended student. Ben captained the soccer team for two years, and he ran indoor and outdoor track for three years. He is also a Yarmouth Clipper Buddy and a volunteer at Preble Street Soup Kitchen. Ben will attend Williams College where he will run track and cross country.

Kristopher Cody is the son of Ronald and Wendy Cody. He has been a guitarist for YHS jazz band, Co-Captain of the Debate Team, and member of Varsity Baseball and Soccer teams. He was selected for the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award, Biology Award, Spanish IV Award, and participant at the Maine Youth Leadership Seminar. He volunteered at the Iris Network in Portland, for the Maine Youth Court, and did community service work in Nicaragua. He was selected as the Maine Acoustic Music Festival’s mandolinist junior and senior years. Kris plans to take a gap year before attending the University of Virginia.

Isabelle Pazar is the daughter of Anne Marie and Christopher Pazar. Throughout her high school years, Isabelle played flute for the YHS Concert and Jazz Bands, the District II Festival (2011, 2012, 2013), the 2013 All State Festival, and the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble. She has been active in student government as a Junior and Senior Class Council Representative. She played field hockey and participated in the Playmakers’ Drama Club and pit orchestra. During the last two years, she served as a student mentor through the YHS Clipper Buddy program. Isabelle will be attending Boston College in the fall.

Jasper Houston is the son of Bob and Holly Houston. Jasper was on the Nordic Skiing and Crew (rowing) teams for four years and was a Captain of both teams his senior year. He has been a Co-President of the Outing Club for the last two years. Jasper will be attending Bowdoin College in the fall where he will pursue physical sciences and be a member of the crew team.

Gemma Shay is the daughter of Mardie Weldon and Michael Shay. Gemma played field hockey for four years and tennis for three. She has been a member of Outing Club, Model UN, and the Maine Youth Court. Gemma will be attending Wesleyan University in the fall where she plans to study Physics and Computer Science.

James Erwin is the son of Jim and Eileen Erwin. He has been active in music and theatre throughout high school. He sang in Chamber Choir and was a three-year participant in All State. He served as Co-President of the Playmakers Drama Club his senior year and performed in three state championship One-Act casts. He was a member of the cross-country team, Film Club, Young Conservatives and Student Senate. He is an Eagle Scout and was a delegate to Dirigo Boys State. He volunteered as a producer and host at YWAR radio. He plans to attend Bates College and major in History and Music.

Wyatt Jackson is the son of Jim and Julie Jackson. He played soccer and basketball for four years and was named Western Maine Conference All-Academic in both sports. Wyatt will be attending the University of Richmond in the fall.

Hannah Peters is the daughter of Brian Peters and Christine Manderson. She was the recipient of the Cornell University Book Award, the Ruth B. Plummer Award for Community Service, and was an AP Scholar. She was a member of the varsity field hockey team, swam for the Casco Bay Stripers for eight years, was an active member of the Outing Club and the Senior Youth Group at First Universalist Church. She has also studied piano for nine years and has an active interest in photography. Hannah plans to take a gap year to volunteer internationally before attending Colby College.

Lily Daggett is the daughter of Cath and Clint Daggett. Lily played field hockey for four years, serving as Captain her senior year. A pole vaulter, Lily was a Captain of both indoor and outdoor track and field teams her junior year. She has also been involved with Model UN, and YHS Outing Club. She attended the Bread Loaf Young Writers workshop and ran light/sound backstage for numerous YHS Playmakers productions. Lily will attend Colgate University this fall.

Max Watson is the son of Bret and Sheryl Watson and has siblings Lilly and Charles Henry. Max has been a three sport Captain in soccer, hockey, and lacrosse. He has been very involved in the Clipper Buddy program and volunteers with the various sports camps. He is attending Bates College in the fall.

Sam Alexander is the son of Frank and Kathy Alexander. Sam was Co-Founder and Captain of the Yarmouth sailing team which twice won the Maine Schools Downeast Championship. He served as President of the Student Senate and was Captain of the Nordic ski team. Sam has performed with the All-State and All-Eastern choirs and was a Yarmouth Choral Award recipient. He is a National Merit Finalist, AP Scholar with Distinction, Ruth B. Plummer Academic Award winner, and was honored as the recipient of the Hector Hebert Award. Sam will attend Brown University in the fall where he plans to study Physics and Chemistry.

Katherine Overhaug is the daughter of Debora and Mark Overhaug and the sister of Anders Overhaug. Katie played field hockey all four years and track and tennis for two years. She was a center back in field hockey and threw the shot put. She’s been in the Outing Club and recently participated in One Acts. She will be attending Syracuse University in the fall and is still undecided, but is leaning towards a major in the sciences area.
