PORTLAND — Sally Ann Lynn, 72, of Portland, died unexpectedly May 8, after a hard-fought battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Born in Rockland, she was a daughter of William and Priscilla Roast. She was a graduate of Deering High School, Class of 1959. In 1960, she enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. She served three years active duty and two years Marine Corps Reserves and was honorably discharged as a sergeant.

In 1963, she married Calvin Lynn traveled the world as a Marine Corps wife for 28 years. She was extremely proud of her military service and of her time as a military wife. During their time at Brunswick Naval Air Station, they planned some of the most elaborate Marine Corps Balls, making thousands of red and gold paper flowers. She attended 50 years of Marine Corps Balls. She enjoyed attending the monthly wives version of “Gathering of Gyrenes” which met every second Tuesday of the month.

Upon her husband’s retirement from the Marine Corps, the family returned to Portland. She picked up her father’s tax return business and genuinely enjoyed tax season because she loved hearing about her customer’s lives and families. When her illness progressed, giving up her customers was one of the most difficult things she encountered. She considered so many of them family after being a part of their lives for 30 years.

Returning to Portland, she regained ties with her sorority sisters from high school. The Deering High Pi Kappa Sorority and Friends met regularly to attend plays, movies, potlucks, Christmas parties and summer socials.

She was a strong-willed, opinionated person who loved life and always put family and friends first. She enjoyed getting her hair done every Thursday and shopping for hours. The house radiated around Christmas, from the weeks she spent decorating as well as making her famous homemade chocolate candies.

A celebration of love and life was held Tuesday. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Ave, Portland.
