HARPSWELL — The American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day will bring together outdoor enthusiasts across the country on June 7, for the 22nd annual celebration of America’s magnificent trail system and its countless supporters and volunteers.

Over 2,000 nationwide events will take place, including trail maintenance, hiking, paddling, biking, horseback riding, bird watching, running, trail celebrations and more.

Harpswell Recreation, in partnership with Harpswell Heritage Land Trust, is holding its fifth annual Harpswell Hiking Challenge for 2014.

Experience eight coastal walks with the challenge of completing all 10 miles of trail in two days. The selfguided walks range from the easy, wheelchair-accessible loop at Mitchell Field to the moderately difficult Cliff Trail loop.

Free registration forms and directions are available online or on June 7 at the Harpswell Town Office, located at 263 Mountain Road in Harpswell.

The information booth will be staffed from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

This is not a race,” said Harpswell organizer Donald Miskill Jr. “Take your time to see other Harpswell sights, take rest stops or plan to have lunch in town. You can walk less than the eight trails, but if you complete all eight trail loops and 10 miles, you will be recognized as having completed the Harpswell Hiking Challenge.

There will be 100 T-shirts handed out, sponsored by Roxanne York Real Estate.
