A person was struck and killed by an Amtrak Downeaster train Saturday evening in South Portland, according to Amtrak.

The accident occurred at 6:55 p.m. near Calvary Cemetery, one mile south of the Portland Transportation Center.

The person, who was trespassing on the tracks, according to Amtrak, was struck by Train 698, which was traveling southbound from Brunswick to Brunswick.

The train was carrying 68 passengers, none of whom was injured.

Crew members, who were also unharmed, asked to be relieved, and a new crew was brought in to work on the train.

As a result of the incident, a second train was also delayed. That train departed Boston at 5 p.m. and was due to arrive in Portland at 7:35 p.m.

Amtrak spokeswoman Kimberly Woods said she would not release the person’s identity or any other information until after notifying next of kin.

The Amtrak Police Department is investigating the incident.
