A 65-year-old Detroit man escaped serious injury Tuesday when his car ran off the shoulder of Interstate 95 near Benton and rolled over after he fell asleep at the wheel.

The accident prompted the closure of one southbound lane shortly before 5 p.m.

Maine State Police Trooper Joe Chretein said Jeffrey Hooker told him he’d been working long shifts and apparently nodded off while driving. Hooker attempted corrective action, but the car rolled over. He was not hurt.

The accident occurred near mile marker 134.
