Self-portrait show takes inward look

Here’s looking at me.

The age of self-indulgence is getting a gallery show.

Donna McNeil, the past director of the Maine Arts Commission, curates an exhibition of self portraits at Engine, the Biddeford arts organization, through July 19.

The show features the inner reflections of several widely known regional artists, including Cig Harvey, Alison Hildreth, Alan Magee, Joseph Nicoletti, Mark Wethli and Shoshanna White.

“SELF/Selfie” also includes a collection of selfies submitted via Instagram tagged #SELFtheshow.

McNeil will participate in a discussion, “From Self Portrait to Selfie: Need to be Seen,” at 6 p.m. July 10. The panel also will include social media expert Rob Gould, #ProjectSelfiePride creator Sabrina Volante, and University of New England psychology professor Julie Longua Peterson. Joshua Bodwell, co-founder of Engine and director of Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance, will moderate.

McNeil spent 10 years with the Maine Arts Commission, including four as executive director.
