NEWPORT, R.I. — Sanford starting pitcher Aaron Howell was lit up for seven runs on eight hits in just four innings of work as the Mainers dropped their NECBL season opener to the Newport Gulls 9-3 at Cardines Field on Friday night.

The Gulls put a run on the board in the bottom of the first, as Tyler Green drove in Reed Gamache with an infield single. Newport plated two more in the second and four in the fourth to end Howell’s night.

The Mainers got all their runs in a three-run sixth, as Kendall Patrick hit a two-run single and Caden Bailey slapped an RBI single of his own.

Sam Dexter led Sanford with three hits, while Sam Balzano had two.

The Mainers return to Sanford for their home opener tonight, as the host the North Adams Steeplecats at 6:35 p.m. at Goodall Park.
