University of Maine senior pitcher Tommy Lawrence has agreed to a free-agent contract with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Lawrence, the 2013 America East Pitcher of the Year, was 19-8 with a 2.75 earned-run average in his two seasons at Maine after transferring from Winthrop University. He told the Bangor Daily News that he expects to be assigned to the Hudson Valley Renegades of the short-season New York-Penn League.

Maine also could lose one of its top recruits, right-handed pitcher Chris Murphy of Billerica, Massachusetts. Murphy was drafted Saturday in the 29th round by the Toronto Blue Jays but hasn’t decided whether to sign.

• Vanderbilt and Texas Tech won their super regionals to advance to the College World Series.

Vince Conde and John Norwood had three hits and two RBI each for Vanderbilt in a 12-5 win over Stanford that gave the Commodores (46-19) a 2-1 victory in the best-of-three series.

Texas Tech (45-20) defeated the College of Charleston 1-0 behind Dylan Dusek’s fourth straight scoreless start for a 2-0 series win.

BASEBALL

TWILIGHT LEAGUE: Alex Tobey pitched five scoreless innings with no walks and six strikeouts as Aero Heating and Ventilating defeated Patriot Insurance 4-3 in an opener at Gorham.

Tobey struck out six and walked none. Aero held on after taking a 3-0 lead in the first five innings.

NECBL: Jeff Singer allowed one hit in seven innings and the Sanford Mainers (2-1) took a 2-0 win over the Laconia Muskrats (0-3) at Laconia, New Hampshire.

Singer struck out six and walked two.

Sam Balzano and Sam Dexter each went 2 for 4 and scored a run for the Mainers.

FCBL: Graham McIntire doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of eighth inning to give the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide (1-3) a 3-2 win over the Torrington Titans (1-3) at The Ballpark.

Rahiem Cooper went 2 for 4 with a run scored for the Raging Tide.

SOCCER

MLS: Midfielder Eric Alexander scored his first goal of the season and the New York Red Bulls earned a 2-0 victory over the host New England Revolution.

Peguy Luyindula scored his third goal of the season for the Red Bulls in the 76th minute, a right-footed shot from atop the penalty box.

Alexander, who had taken just four shots on goal this season, headed in a cross in the 17th minute from the left wing by Lloyd Sam after New England keeper Bobby Shuttleworth was knocked to the turf in a scramble. Luyindula’s goal was his first in 10 matches.

The Red Bulls (4-5-6) snapped a four-match winless streak, while New England (7-5-2) suffered its second straight shutout loss.

• Erick Torres gave Chivas USA an early lead, Gyasi Zardes pulled the host Los Angeles Galaxy even before halftime, and the Southern California rivals played to a 1-1 tie.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Seimone Augustus scored 26 points, Maya Moore and Damiris Dantas each had double-doubles, and the Minnesota Lynx beat the host Los Angeles Sparks 85-72.

• Cappie Pondexter scored a season high-21 points and Tina Charles added 14 to help the host New York Liberty snap a three-game losing streak with an 81-64 win over the Washington Mystics.
