PORTLAND — Bernadette Tatarczuk Murphy, 82, died peacefully June 4 at Mercy Hospital.

She was born in Portland May 10, 1932, the daughter of William and Stasia Nalbach Tatarczuk. She attended local schools and graduated from Cathedral High School in 1949 and then from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1953 as a registered nurse. She also attended St. Joseph’s College for post-graduate work.

In March of 1957 she married Dr. Michael Murphy, of Ireland, at St. Louis Church.

She worked at Mercy Hospital as a surgical nurse before studying at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. After getting married, she and her husband moved to Texas where she served as the director of nursing at several facilities. Following the death of her husband in 1976, she returned to Maine. She attended Sacred Heart and Holy Martyrs Church and was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Church.

Murphy was a dedicated and talented nurse who believed that no effort was too great to achieve one’s goals. She had a sharp intellect and quick wit. 

She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Murphy; son, Joseph Murphy; sister, Antoinette Tatarczuk in 1996; brother, Vincent A. Tatarczuk in 2013; and two nephews, William and Jeffrey Tatarczuk.

She is survived by a son, Michael William Murphy and Honey; brother, Joseph R. Tatarczuk and Joan; nephew, David Tatarczuk and Jennifer; and niece, Jennifer Rohrwasser and Mark.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated June 7 at St. Louis Church, Portland. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, Portland.
