It is sad when we lose local memories. A May 27 dispatch (“Grass fire causes damage to siding of nearby house”) tells about a grass fire in South Portland “near the baseball fields on Pine Street.”

In the 1940s, this area was known as “Old Joe’s Pond.” I believe it was more of a large vernal pool as it was never very deep and there was no source of water coming into it other than rainwater, but “pond” is what it was called before it was swallowed up by the invasive plants that were the source of the fire.

“Old Joe’s” real attribute was that it provided a pretty good place to ice skate, although we Meeting House Hill kids who didn’t go to Henley School were sometimes not very welcome there.
