Sierra Club Maine supports Rep. Chellie Pingree’s Coastal Communities Acidification Act (HR 4692) to protect Maine from one of many disturbing impacts of global warming pollution: ocean acidification.
The bill would require federal officials to study the effects of ocean acidification on coastal communities in Maine and around the country.
We strongly encourage Rep. Mike Michaud and Sens. Susan Collins and Angus King to support HR 4692.
Maine’s economy and our coastal towns depend on healthy and thriving fisheries. As carbon pollution makes the ocean more acidic, many species, including clams, mussels and lobsters, are threatened.
We applaud the Maine Legislature for passing a bipartisan bill, sponsored by marine scientist and state Rep. Mick Devin, D-Newcastle, to create a commission on ocean acidification.
We look forward to the commission’s research and recommendations to address this alarming threat to our iconic fishing industry.
