I have noted, wherever I have happened to live, that participation in sports is available to all, but that the given sport tends to be highly competitive and thus does not typically involve women. A woman who wishes to participate in softball in Portland is allowed to do so, but she’d better be Olympic material!
I have also learned that in order for both men and women to play strictly recreational, noncompetitive sports, you have to create that opportunity yourself. So this is an invitation to all, especially to seniors, to dust off that glove and join together in the afternoon for a scrimmage once or twice a week.
