The Slate story on Duncan Hines on Page C4 of the May 21 paper (“Life of food celebrity Duncan Hines leaves sour taste”), says, “In 1948 he had better name recognition than the vice president of the United States.”

Perhaps not really much of a feat, if my memory is correct. It tells me that in 1948 there was no vice president of the United States.
