As conservation officer for the Sebago Lake Anglers Association, I write to express our continuing alarm about potential hazards to the greater Portland water supply and associated uses of that water, such as fishing, should tar sands oil spill into Sebago Lake or its tributaries, including the Crooked River.

We salute the dedicated efforts of the South Portland City Council and citizens to block tar sands oil from flowing into or through that city. We are impressed that South Portland is a signatory to the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Climate Protection accord to reduce industrial air emissions.

Loading tar sands oil onto tankers in South Portland would be a new industrial source of air pollution, not just in that city but to the air all of us breathe in the Portland region.
