South Portland is a great city blessed by a beautiful coastline. For hundreds of years the ocean has provided food, jobs, and recreation for local citizens and visitors. The Draft Ordinance Committee was tasked by the City Council to write an ordinance which will protect our coast from the dangers of loading tar sands in our port to be exported elsewhere.

I am a person who cares deeply about the environment. We only have one planet, one place that sustains our life. We must take care of that place. The proposed ordinance helps us do that. It protects existing businesses, allowing them to continue as they always have, while keeping toxic tar sands from coming into South Portland for loading onto ships.
