DOVER, N.H. – Jurors have wrapped up their first day of deliberations in the trial of a 31-year-old man prosecutors say raped and killed a University of New Hampshire student in 2012.

The panel of seven women and five women spent Thursday afternoon deliberating the fate of Seth Mazzaglia of Dover, charged with killing 19-year-old Elizabeth “Lizzi” Marriott of Westborough, Massachusetts. The jury went home around 4 p.m.

Mazzaglia is charged with first-degree murder and other felonies in the Oct. 9, 2012, death of Elizabeth “Lizzi” Marriott, 19, of Westborough, Massachusetts.

The verdicts hinge on whether the jurors believe his former girlfriend, 20-year-old Kathryn McDonough, who testified for 19 days. He did not testify during the trial.

Mazzaglia has said Marriott died during consensual rough sex.
