As the baby boom generation ages, the median age in the United States keeps going up – from 37.5 to 37.6 years between 2012 and 2013, according to new estimates from the Census Bureau. Meanwhile, young men are going west to take jobs in the oil and gas industry in the Great Plains, which is driving down the median age in five states in that region. Maine has a median age of 43.9 – highest in the nation and 13 years older than Utah’s lowest-in-the-nation median age of 30.2. Maine tied with Vermont as the state with the lowest percent of its population under age 5, which is 4.9 percent.
