Cumberland pitcher flirts with perfect game in 1-0 in American Legion victory

Caleb Normandeau carried a perfect game into the sixth inning and finished with a one-hitter Monday as Cumberland beat Falmouth 1-0 in a Zone 4 American Legion game at Cumberland.

Normandeau finished with a one-hitter for Cumberland (2-3), striking out four and walking none against Falmouth (1-3). The run came on a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Corey Brink.

Joe Apon had three singles to lead Andrews Post (2-2) past Saco-Biddeford Savings (5-3) 2-1 at Portland. Apon had the winning single in the bottom of the seventh to score Jake Neault. Corey Walker has a pair of doubles for Saco-Biddeford Savings.

 Peter Dutton threw a six-hitter as Yankee Ford (6-2) edged Libby-Mitchell (3-4) 2-0 at Portland.

 Staples Crossing (6-0) used a 15-hit offense to beat Noble 14-5 at South Paris.

 Damon Wallace had a triple, a double and a pair of RBI to lead Moody’s Collision (6-2) over Schwartzs & Schwartzs (1-5) 8-4 at Gorham.

Alex McCarthy added a triple and a single with an RBI. Kevin Goldberg and Nate Lorenger each had a pair of singles for Schwartz & Schwartzs.

Morrill Post (5-1) unleashed a 19-hit offense to beat Standish Post 128 (3-5) in a five-inning game at Standish.

NECBL: Caden Bailey hit a game-winning double in the ninth inning as the Sanford Mainers (11-8) nipped the Valley Blue Sox (6-12) 1-0 at Sanford.

NHL: Montreal traded veteran forward Daniel Briere to Colorado for forward Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau and a fifth-round pick in the 2015 draft.

Briere, 36, who is heading into the final year of his contract, had 13 goals and 12 assists in 69 games with the Canadiens last season.

 Minnesota made qualifying offers to five restricted free agents: defenseman Jonathon Blum, right wing Justin Fontaine, goalie Darcy Kuemper, right wing Nino Niederreiter and left wing Jason Zucker.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Chicago point guard Courtney Vandersloot will be sidelined for 6 to 10 weeks with a sprain in her left knee.

Vandersloot hurt the medial collateral ligament Friday night in the final seconds of Chicago’s victory against the New York Liberty when she ran into a hard screen by Plenette Pierson.

FOOTBALL

MUSIC CITY BOWL: The Music City Bowl will take place on Dec. 30 for a second straight season at 3 p.m. at Nashville, Tenn. The bowl matches a Southeastern Conference representative against a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference or Big Ten.
