LEWISTON — A Poland man charged with stabbing his uncle has been held on $40,000 bail after his lawyer said in court that the stabbing was self-defense.

Phillip Audet appeared in court Monday following his arrest Sunday on charges including elevated aggravated assault.

Police say the 29-year-old Audet used a butcher’s knife to stab 49-year-old Steven Narbonne twice during an argument Sunday. Audet lived at his uncle’s home.

Authorities say Audet fled the scene in Narbonne’s vehicle, but abandoned it on Interstate 95 in Portland, where police with dogs pursued him into the woods.

The Sun Journal reports that Audet’s lawyer said surveillance video will “prove that this was an act of self-defense.”

Narbonne was listed on Monday in good condition at Central Maine Medical Center.
