PORTLAND — Buy a brick, save a church.

That’s the plan for Sacred Heart Church as the Sacred Heart-St. Dominic Parish looks to raise $200,000 – with a Latino Festival thrown in for good measure on Saturday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

The festival in the church hall and parking lot, at Sherman and Mellen streets, will help highlight the work done by the Diocesan Hispanic Ministry for Greater Portland, Sister Patricia Pora said in a press release.

“There will be an opportunity to sample dishes from Central and South America, like tamales and pupusas, plus games for children, handmade crafts for purchase and live music,” said Pora, the director of Hispanic Ministry for the Diocese of Portland.

The first Mass in Sacred Heart Church was celebrated in 1897. The church is now home to the parish, which was combined several years ago. St. Dominic Church, at Gray and State streets, was the first Catholic church in Portland and is now home to the Maine Irish Heritage Center.

Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland spokesman Dave Guthro said Sacred Heart serves parishioners from 12 Spanish-speaking countries with Bible studies and Sunday masses in Spanish.

A parish food pantry distributes about 3,000 pounds of food each week. The parish also serves its community with programs and refugee services from Maine Catholic Charities.

With about $135,000 raised already, the parish capital fund campaign organizers are also offering the public a chance to “Buy a Brick.” For $50, donors can have a brick inscribed before it is used to repair the church tower.
