A crash involving a moose occurred in the southbound lanes of the Maine Turnpike Friday morning.
The crash occurred at mile 26 in Kennebunk at 4:30 a.m. No motorists were injured. The moose was killed in the crash.
Traffic delays were minimal because of the time of day and emergency units had cleared the scene by 5:20 a.m.
Moose collisions have been in the news lately since a Maine State Police trooper’s cruiser was demolished in a collision in Cyr Plantation while he was responding to another moose collision which injured two Van Buren women. The trooper received moderate injuries in the crash.
Sidney Oakes, 60, of Brewer was killed early Tuesday morning when his Dodge Grand Caravan struck a moose on Interstate 95 near Howland.
Last year, there were 385 moose-vehicle collisions and no fatalities, and there have been only 113 collisions through July 9 this year, with the one fatality that occurred this week.
Up to 80 percent of moose-vehicle accidents in Maine occur between dusk and dawn, according to the Maine DOT.
