LYMAN — Emery W. “Mitch” Mitchell, 83, of Lyman, died Friday, July 11, 2014 at the Monarch Center in Saco, after a long illness with dementia.

He was born in Waterville on Oct. 12, 1930, the son of Whitman Revere and Bertha Louise Buker Mitchell. He was educated in Portland schools, graduating from Portland High School with the Class of 1951.

On Sept. 8, 1951, he married his high school sweetheart Theresa M. Michaud at the Cathedral in Portland.

Emery proudly served in the United States Army’s 102nd infantry division stationed in Germany.

After the war, Emery went back to school on the G.I. Bill at SMVTI in South Portland, where he graduated as a machinist in 1956.

He worked as a machinist at Portland Copper and Tank Co. in South Portland. He worked four years with Hudson Pulp and Paper Co. in South Windham and last worked 33 years with Metal Tech, which later became HoneyComb Systems, Inc. in Biddeford, retiring in 1994.

In retirement, Emery and Theresa enjoyed many hours together traveling and researching their family genealogy. Emery was most happy when he was attending a huge family reunion or watching his children and grandchildren in all their activities through the years. Emery was passionate about his gardening, family lobster bakes, corn on the cob, hunting and fishing, and traveling with friends and family. He fondly remembered his trip to England with his niece and nephew. He loved going to Calais to visit his brother Elliott and his family. He loved his YMCA family, the great friends he had in the Portland area and the many years he lived in Goodwin’s Mills.

Surviving are: one daughter, Catherine L. Girard and her husband Rene of Lyman; three sons, John E. Mitchell and his wife Debra of Lyman, James E. Mitchell and his wife Tracie of Windham and Ralph B. Mitchell and his wife Kelly of Sanford; one brother, Elliott B. Mitchell and his wife Glenys of Westbrook; six grandchildren, Derrick Girard, Joshua Girard, Cassie Vaughan and her husband Mark, Adam Mitchell, Lesley Mitchell and Karalynn Mitchell; and one great-grandchild, Bentley Whitman James Vaughan.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 18, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the Goodwin’s Mills Cemetery, Lyman. Arrangements are by Hope Memorial Chapel, 480 Elm St., Biddeford, ME 04005.
