Portland police say they are investigating a home invasion and robbery attempt Sunday night during which one shot was fired.

The incident happened on Smith Street, which runs off Cumberland Avenue, about 9:30 p.m. when two armed men tried to rob residents inside an apartment, police said Monday.

The shot that was fired struck the door of another apartment in the building. Police said the apartment was occupied but would provide no details on who was inside or whether the bullet pierced the door.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

The apartment invaded by the would-be robbers was occupied by four adults and three children at the time, according to a police news release. The occupants told police that the men, each armed with a handgun, entered the apartment and demanded money.

The men ran off without taking any money, police said.

The intruders are described as two black men, both in their 20s. They are between 5-feet-7-inches and 5-feet-11-inches tall. One man was bald and the second had either cornrows or dreadlocks.
