HARPSWELL — The Orr’s and Bailey Islands Fire Department will hold its 21st annual auction and yard sale Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 9 and 10.

The weekend includes a silent auction and food, but the real excitement begins Sunday, when the department holds a live auction, featuring unique antiques, art and collectibles.

“It has become an island institution,” Chief Ed Blain said. “We look forward to seeing familiar faces who have supported us for the past two decades, as well as people coming for the first time.”

The event, held at the Orr’s Island Fire Station and neighboring schoolhouse on Harpswell Island Road, usually attracts large crowds of people who search through the sprawling yard sale, or go all out for that one coveted item at the silent and live auctions.

Items for the event are donated by area residents throughout the year. All proceeds support the department’s operations and training for its members.

One of the items up for sale is a life-sized, carved wooden dolphin dating back to the 1920s, which has been displayed in Maine and Florida.

Other treasures include antique lamps, desks, bureaus, dining room furniture and collectibles.

Boats of all sorts, from a 14-foot skiff with a motor and trailer, to kayaks and paddleboards, will also go on the auction block, along with a variety of bicycles, Blain said.

“We have more bikes than ever,” he said.

Surprise auction items, including locally baked pies, will also be featured. Gift certificates donated by local restaurants, jewelers, fishermen, and home and garden suppliers will be available at the silent auction, which takes place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday.

The yard sale runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The live auction begins at 10 a.m. Sunday, and registration begins at 9 a.m.
