GREENWICH, Conn. — Police say a 16-year-old girl has been killed and another teen girl seriously injured in a boating accident in Long Island Sound near Greenwich.

Harbormaster John Macmillan said two girls in a tube being towed by a boat flipped out and were hit Wednesday afternoon by the boat operated by two other girls.

Greenwich police Lt. Kraig Gray told WTNH-TV the tube collided with the boat’s propeller. Gray says the surviving girl has a leg injury. She is expected to recover.

Police say the girls are Greenwich High School students. Their names haven’t been released.

Greenwich Schools Superintendent William McKersie tells WFSB-TV the girl who died would have been a junior. He said counselors will be available for the school communities.

Police and state conservation officials are investigating. WFSB reports police say alcohol wasn’t a factor.
