SCARBOROUGH — Kenneth J. Libby, 91, of Scarborough, died July 23 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.

Libby was born in Scarborough on Aug. 24, 1922, the oldest son of Richard and Maude (Plowman) Libby. Growing up, he was active in 4-H and graduated from Scarborough High School in 1940. He then attended Bentley Business School in Boston and graduated from Bryant-Stratton Business School.

Libby served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942-1945, and was a member of the “Night Fighters” 450th AAF Base Unit, at Hammer Field, California. In 1943, he married Maudie (Googins) of Lamoine, and their first child, Theodore “Ted” Emery, was born in California in 1945.

Upon his military discharge, Libby and his family returned to Scarborough. He worked at Coca-Cola Bottling and at the Eastland Hotel in Portland, and served as Scarborough town clerk. In 1949, he went to work for the U.S. Post Office in Scarborough, serving as postmaster at the seasonal Prouts Neck office from 1952-1967. During this time, Libby also worked for the Maine Turnpike Authority, retiring for medical reasons in 1977 as the acting executive director.

Libby enjoyed travel, stamp collecting and coaching both his sons in Little League. He was a charter member of Scarborough Rescue and a member of the Maine State Police Reserve in the late 1950s. He served as director of the the Scarborough Library, of the Scarborough Historical Society and of the Black Point Cemetery Association.

He is predeceased by his son, Ted, brother Richard “Mike” Libby and sister-in-law Ruth Libby.

In addition to his wife of 71 years, he is survived by his daughter, Prudence Netzorg, and husband, Phillip, of Thomaston; son, Gregory “Buster” Libby, and wife, Theresa, of Atkinson, New Hampshire; three grandchildren, Robyn Holdsworth, of Caribou, Ronda Johnston and husband, Shad, of Presque Isle, and Randy Libby and wife Avery, of McLean, Virginia; and eight great-grandchildren, Branden, Colby and Ethan Holdsworth, Abagail Johnston, and Brycen, Ryan, Nico and Emery Libby. He is also survived by his brother- and sister-in-law, Maurice and Suzanne Googins, of Lamoine; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Libby’s life and memorial service were held July 26 at Hobbs Funeral Home in Scarborough. Burial followed at Black Point Cemetery.
