Let me start by saying that I’m a recreational bicyclist. As such, I know that we all must follow the same traffic laws that motorists follow.

With that said, I am noticing more and more a disturbing trend among our young cyclists who are nearing automobile driving age: “distracted cycling.”

I’m seeing them holding the handlebar with one hand and their cellphone in the other. It’s apparent they are checking email, texting or just scrolling around.

I would hope that if a law enforcement officer saw such a cyclist, they would pull the cyclist over and warn them about distracted cycling. What a perfect time to educate a future driver about the dangers of distracted driving! After all, the habits we form today are the ones that are very hard to break tomorrow.

I must end by saying that most of the cyclists I’ve referred to above are at least wearing helmets.
