VINALHAVEN — The Coast Guard is investigating the death of a lobsterman whose body was found floating in the water alongside his empty boat off Vinalhaven Island in Penobscot Bay.

Lt. Scott McCann, a Coast Guard spokesman, said that another lobsterman discovered the fishermen’s body and his empty boat in Hurricane Sound – on the western side of Vinalhaven Island – around 1:43 p.m. Wednesday.

That lobsterman pulled the man aboard his boat and sent out a radio distress call. A Coast Guard cutter from Rockland and two Maine Marine Patrol boats arrived a short while later, but attempts to revive the man were unsuccessful. He was transported to Carver’s Harbor in the town of Vinalhaven where emergency medical technicians declared him dead.

McCann said it’s unclear what happened. But he said the case underscores the importance of wearing a life jacket, especially when alone on the water.

The lobsterman’s name is not being released pending notification of his relatives.
