Library’s writing contest winners named

The Scarborough Public Library recognized a group of young creative writers at a reception held at the library last week. Twelve authors in grades 3 through 12 submitted original works of fiction and poetry to the library’s Writers of Summer contest.

Sasha Borodkina won the high school fiction award for her story, “Separated at Birth.” Madeline Shields received the middle school fiction award for an excerpt from her book, “The Wolves of Skyridge: The Twisted Thorn.” The intermediate fiction award went to Isabella Cosma for her story, “Helping the Animal Shelter.” And, the middle school poetry winner was Sam Manganello for his poem, “A Night Jump.”

The winning works will be posted on the youth page of the library’s website at www.scarboroughlibrary.org.

Kate Irish Collins, staff writer for the Current, was one of the judges for the writing contest, along with Nancy Crowell, library director, Connie Burns and Janet Follis, both youth services assistants, and Karen Howell, adult services assistant.

Great East Butcher opens in Scarborough

Great East Butcher Co., a full-service butcher and specialty grocer, opened last week at 450 Payne Road in Scarborough, across from Marden’s.

In addition to offering customers premium meats hand-cut to order, the market offers a fresh selection of seafood, produce, prepared side dishes, Boar’s Head Deli meats, craft beers and wine.

“We want to become a destination in the community for great, local foods,” said Chris Carragher, director of marketing for Great East. “Prices are fair, and we are working with a lot of vendors to offer something new in our store every week.”

The company has another branch in Stratham, N.H., and is holding a grand opening at the new Scarborough store Friday, Aug. 22, through Sunday, Aug. 24. Vendor samplings and discounted steak tips are available. The store will be open daily from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

DMM wins Zerox contract

DMM, Inc., a Scarborough-based document solutions print provider and direct marketing firm, was recently awarded a four-year contract by Xerox Corp. as part of its business growth strategy.

The contract includes the acquisition of the Xerox North Wales, Pennsylvania, Print and Mail Distribution Operation Center. DMM, Inc. acquired the operation, which includes the management of the output of print and communications work for 30 Fortune 500 clients ranging from financial services and health-care sectors to retail management and marketing communications. As a result of the Xerox acquisition, DMM has added 85 employees in North Wales and has substantially increased its revenues, company officials said. The operation will offer additional capability, capacity, and business continuity planning for all of DMM’s customers.

“The Xerox contract with DMM is a natural extension of the two companies’ strong and enduring working relationship and represents the Xerox Corporation’s extreme confidence in DMM’s senior management and operational excellence,” said John Cloutier, DMM president and chief executive officer.

Sandsations Sand Sculpting Contest coming

Bug Light Classic Car Show on tap

The South Portland Parks and Recreation Department will host the Bug Light Classic Car Show on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 4:30 p.m. until sunset at Bug Light Park. More than 50 classic and vintage cars and motorcycles will be on display. The event, which is free and open to the public, includes food, a 50/50 raffle and more. Career planning for new economy

This fall Women, Work, and Community in South Portland is offering a Career Planning in the New Economy workshop, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday, Sept. 16-Oct. 9. Attendees will learn to examine their work values and interests, identify their transferable skills and explore their earning potential.

Also, learn about local projected growth industries and identify the skills, education and training needed to build a career in one of those industries. At the end of the class, all participants will have a plan to achieve their career goals, along with assistance in resume building and job seeking.

South Portland Police Department is seeking crossing guards to help cover school crossings during the new academic year. Final teen crafts event

The final summer Teen Crafternoons project at the South Portland Public Library will be held on Thursday, Aug. 21, at 3 p.m. Celebrate the end of summer reading by decorating a library tote bag. The library will provide the supplies while the attendees should bring the creativity.

After Hours concert presents Cul De Sax

The South Portland Public Library kicks off its third season of the popular After Hours concert series on Saturday, Sept. 6, from 7-8:30 p.m. with local favorite, Cul de Sax Saxophone Quartet, at the library’s main location at 482 Broadway in South Portland.

Arrive prepared to “Name That Tune!” as the band performs popular songs from musicals, TV shows and movies.

The quartet features the major members of the saxophone family – soprano, alto, tenor and baritone – played with style by professional musicians who have been performing together for 20 years. Its repertoire covers a wide range of musical styles and their versatility and talent will make this participatory concert truly fun and enjoyable.

Note that this concert will be held outside of the library’s usual hours of operation, and as such, regular library services will not be available.

Admission to this event, which is made possible through the support of the Friends of the South Portland Public Library, is free. Senior volunteers needed

The Opportunity Alliance has openings in its Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Programs with placements in York, Cumberland and southern Oxford counties.

Adults 55 and over can make a difference in someone’s life while having a great time and earning a little extra money. Foster Grandparents volunteer with children in schools and child development centers. Senior Companions support independent living for elders living in their own homes or attending an adult day program.

Volunteers who commit to a minimum of 15 hours a week, and meet generous income guidelines, receive a tax-free stipend, mileage reimbursement and other benefits that do not affect Social Security, food stamps, LIHEAP, or subsidized housing eligibility. Non-stipended opportunities are available for those interested in fewer hours.
