KENNEBUNK — Lloyd Preston Mahler, 93, a resident of Rosewood Circle, died suddenly Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014 at his residence.

Lloyd was born March 4, 1921 in Lynn, Massachusetts, the son of Lloyd V. and Alice Pyne Mahler.

He was a graduate of Medford High School and Northeastern University, with a degree in accounting.

Soon after graduating, he entered the U.S. Navy in 1943, where he was assigned Midshipman’s School at Columbia University, and was commissioned as an ensign in July of 1943. He served at naval stations in Maine aboard sub chasers, and in 1944 was transferred to Virginia for more submarine chasing school. His ship received orders to be transferred to the Pacific on Aug. 1, 1945, and when it arrived at Pearl Harbor on Oct. 24, 1945, he learned he was going back to New York.

After the war, Lloyd spent a brief time working for an accounting firm, before beginning a 25-year career with Webster Thomas Wholesale Foods as an account rep, working in a territory that covered Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine.

After his retirement, he and Joyce moved to Kennebunk, where he joined his family at Coastal Decorating, putting his sales rep skills to work.

Lloyd was an active member of the Kennebunk Rotary Club, and served 16 years on the Kennebunk Light and Power Company board of directors. He loved spending time at his camp in Belgrade and playing golf.

He was preceded in death by: a brother, Willard Mahler.

Survivors include: his wife of 69 years, Joyce McLean Mahler of Kennebunk; four sons, Ken Mahler and his wife Carol of Gray, Steve Mahler and his wife Cindy of Kennebunk, Peter Mahler and his wife Kate of Westford, Massachusetts and Douglas Mahler of Portland; three daughters, Deborah Mahler of Kennebunk, Maribeth Williamson and her husband Brian of Gorham, and Jane Whetstone and her husband Rick of Wells; a brother, Russell Mahler of Orlando, Florida; a cousin, Chandler Blackington of Vinalhaven, whom he thought of as a brother; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A time of visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22 at the Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. Private interment with military honors will take place in Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk. Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Kennebunk Rotary Club Scholarship Fund, P.O.
