PORTLAND — John Francis Patrick Greeley Jr., 57, of Portland, died peacefully Aug. 18 at Maine Medical Center with his family by his side.

He was born March 15, 1957, in Portland, a son of John Francis Patrick Greeley Sr. and Joan Grant Labbe. He was educated in local schools and graduated from Portland High School.

Greeley served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era. He married Jeanette M. Scanlin on Aug. 31, 1974.

Later, Greeley attended Southern Maine Technical College and received his associate’s degree in applied sciences in 2000. He was employed at Sappi for 11 years, and then at Berlin City Auto Dealership for seven years. He stopped working in 2010 due to ill health.

He loved to visit the beach, and enjoyed playing pool in the Portland leagues. He was an avid Patriots fan and enjoyed watching television. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his parents and a son, Joshua L. Greeley, in March 1999. Surviving are his wife, Jeanette; sons, John F. Greeley III, of Portland, and Matthew T. Greeley and wife, Christina, of Greenville, South Carolina; a sister, Barbara Fitzgerald and husband, Robert, of Westbrook; a brother, Andrew Greeley, of Old Orchard Beach; grandchildren, Emily P. Greeley, Brendan J. Greeley, McKinley Jack Greeley and, soon, Olivia Faith Greeley, who is expected in November.

Visiting hours were held Aug. 21, with an Aug. 22 graveside service including military honors at New Calvary Cemetery, in South Portland.
