A leading advocacy group for gay, lesbian and transgender people in Maine will not make an endorsement in this year’s U.S. Senate race in the state.

The race between Republican Sen. Susan Collins and Democratic challenger Shenna Bellows involves two candidates who publicly support same-sex marriage.

EqualityMaine said in a prepared statement that the group is “pleased that there are two pro-equality candidates” and it will make no endorsement.

The group said it will focus its efforts on races in which pro-equality candidates face opponents of gay rights legislation.

Collins announced her support of same-sex marriage in June. She opposed constitutional amendments that sought to define marriage as between a woman and a man. Bellows campaigned in favor of a ballot initiative that legalized same-sex marriage in Maine in 2012.
