I watched the Sunday night news Aug. 17, then switched to “60 Minutes.” Both programs had features about poverty in America. No, not the deadbeats our governor dislikes – and includes me as one, because I receive my dead husband’s Social Security.

No, these are disabled and ill veterans, current military members, Appalachians without jobs and without health insurance (because Virginia, like Maine, did not expand Medicaid to help those who have fallen through the cracks of Obamacare).

They are young and old, embarrassed that they are in a line at a food pantry or waiting for medical care from a broken-down Winnebago health wagon.

Are there some who are taking advantage of our health and welfare systems, looking for a handout? Absolutely! Shame on them! For most, who are trying and need a hand up, shame on us!
