Police removed two bodies from a guest room at a motel in Biddeford on Tuesday night, but would not say what might have happened to the two people.

Biddeford Deputy Police Chief JoAnne Fisk confirmed that two bodies were discovered around 5:30 p.m. in Room 9 at the Sleepy Hollow Motel at 297 Elm St., which is also Route 1.

The bodies are male and female, police said. Fisk would not identify the people pending the notification of family members.

The bodies were taken to the state medical examiner to determine the cause and manner of death. The results will determine whether or not the case is transferred to the Maine State Police, which investigates homicides in every city and town except Portland and Bangor.

A Biddeford Police Department Crime Scene Unit truck was sent to the motel and several police officers were seen entering and leaving a single room.

State police spokesman Stephen McCausland said that one state police detective was sent to Biddeford on Tuesday night to assist Biddeford police with their investigation into the cause of the deaths.

McCausland did not rule out homicide, but said it is fairly common for police departments such as Biddeford’s to call on the state police to assist with all types of investigations.

The motel website said it offers “over 25 clean and comfortable rooms to stay in while you visit the beautiful state of Maine.” Sleepy Hollow features smoking rooms and kitchenette units.
