AUGUSTA (AP) — Democratic state Sen. Geoff Gratwick says his party’s gubernatorial candidate Mike Michaud is “not a brain guy.”
In a recording made without his knowledge, Gratwick also said that if the governor’s race were between Michaud and independent Eliot Cutler, he probably would have voted for Cutler because “he’s probably more measured, brighter.”
The Republican Party released an edited version of the recording Tuesday. A spokesman declined to provide The Associated Press with the full recording, saying the constituent feared he’d be identified.
Gratwick did not return a message seeking comment but he apologized in a statement in which he said his remarks were taken out of context. Michaud’s campaign said the recording shows that Republicans are desperate and willing to “do anything to distract from Gov. LePage’s failed leadership.”

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
