Re: “New Balance gets foot in the door of Pentagon” (Sept. 4):
Your article appears to give our senators the credit for the dramatic Department of Defense change that makes it mandatory for our military footwear to be made in America, hopefully at New Balance in Maine. The person who brought about the change, Democratic U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud, is barely mentioned.
Mike spent four years of his life in Congress making this happen. He personally delivered a pair of New Balance sneakers to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and others. He brought them the certifications showing they’d be compliant with military regulations.
Mike was turned down repeatedly, but he kept talking to more people, listened to objections, persuaded opponents and even talked to the president.
We’re well aware of Mike’s key role in the “made in America” process, and it bothers us that your article did not recognize his contribution.
