A vehicle driven by a New York woman in northern Franklin County was charged and struck by a moose as the woman tried to drive around the animal early Thursday.

Around 1:30 a.m. Cpl. Nathan Reid received a report of a car and moose collision on Loon Lake Road in Dallas Plantation, according to a news release from Franklin County Sheriff Scott Nichols.

The driver, Rita Tempel, of Bellport, New York, told Reid the moose was standing in the road and did not move when she approached. She reported that she tried to drive her 2012 Toyota Highlander slowly around the moose.

“However, at that point the moose charged the car, ramming the side, causing reportable damage to the vehicle,” said Nichols.

Tempel reported the moose then walked off into the woods. Tempel was not hurt during the incident.
