BRUNSWICK

Pejepscot Historical Society will host Heirloom Harvest Day, set to take place Saturday, Sept. 20.

Pejepscot Historical Society is a private, non-profit, educational organization charged with preserving the collective heritage of Brunswick, Harpswell, and Topsham. The Society owns and operates the Joshua L. Chamberlain House Museum and the Skolfield-Whittier House, both of which are open to the public.

Heirloom Harvest Day celebrates PHS’s Skolfield-Whittier House and its treasures. From 1-5 p.m., special tours of Skolfield-Whittier House will be offered on the hour. Costumed interpreters inside the house will bring the stories of the Skolfields and Whittiers who lived in the home vividly to life.

Another highlight of the day will be the opening of a new exhibit at the Pejepscot Museum and Research Center called “In and Out of Context: Textile Arts.” This exhibit, curated by volunteer Jill Snyder Wallace, will highlight many of the pieces of textile art created by the Skolfield and Whittier women that are not normally visible on tours of the home. These 19th- and early-20th-century artworks will be matched with work by contemporary textile artists who were inspired by the historic pieces. At 2 p.m., Jill Snyder Wallace will talk about putting the exhibit together; at 3 p.m., artist Suzanne Bruno will do a presentation on crazy quilts.

David Day will do heirloom appraisals from 2-4 p.m. From 1-5 p.m., there will be family crafts and games on the mall in front of Skolfield-Whittier House.

PHS will host an heirloom cocktail and craft beer reception at 4:30 pm. Finally, at 7 p.m. at First Parish Church’s Pilgrim House, all are invited to watch Brunswick friends and neighbors perform in a staged reading of Frank Whittier and Albert Tolman’s 1913 play, “Brunswick: An Historical Play.” Stars include Maine State Music Theatre artistic director Curt Dale Clark, Brunswick postmaster Tim Mayo, Curtis Memorial Library staff Sarah Brown and Paul Dostie, Brunswick Downtown Association director Deborah King and many more.

In the week before Heirloom Harvest Day, PHS will run a history scavenger hunt. Clues will be posted to the Pejepscot Historical Society Facebook page each weekday, starting today and running through Friday, Sept. 19, for a total of six clues. See the PHS Facebook page for complete details.
