I was pleased to hear that Maine Conservation Voters has endorsed Democrat Cathy Breen in November for the state Senate District 25 seat. She deserves it.

The organization has been an environmental watchdog in Augusta for more than 25 years, promoting forward-thinking policies that protect Maine’s air, water and wildlife.

During Breen’s six years on the Falmouth Town Council, I worked with her when I served on the Long-Range Planning Commission. She had a common-sense approach to protecting the town’s open space and environmentally sensitive areas, recognizing their value to the economy and quality of life for future generations.

I was particularly impressed with her leadership in getting fellow councilors to support the referendum that has protected hundreds of acres of outdoor recreation space and wildlife habitat in Falmouth, curbing suburban sprawl. It was a landmark move for a municipality in Maine.

We need Breen’s leadership in Augusta.
