The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife was established to manage wildlife populations with the best interests of both the creatures and the general public in mind. The agency has determined that hunting with bait and hounds, and trapping, are important tools to manage a bear population that is thriving.

But Question 1 affects far more people than bear hunters, or people who may encounter more nuisance bears should it pass.

Many camps and outfitters all over Maine that offer bear hunts also cater to snowmobilers, fishermen, campers, hikers and others from far and wide. The revenue lost should Question 1 pass will compromise their ability to provide all the goods and services they offer all of us.

Voting against this referendum, or donating to Save Maine’s Bear Hunt, will preserve a sound bear management plan. More importantly, it will preserve the infrastructure that enables all of us to enjoy the Maine outdoors.
