KENNEBUNK — By late in a tightly played first half Friday, the Greely girls’ soccer team appeared to be a step faster and a touch better than a much-improved Kennebunk squad. Midway through the second half, the Rangers left no doubt.

Izzy Hutnak had two goals and an assist and Jocelyn Mitiguy contributed a goal and an assist to lead Greely to a 6-1 win in a Western Maine Conference match at Veterans Memorial Field.

The Rangers (5-0) scored three goals in seven minutes to put the game away.

“That second half was absolutely surgical,” said Kennebunk Coach John Dolan. “Once they got the two-goal lead, we kind of hung our heads and lost our shape, and they carved us up.”

Mitiguy said the Rangers’ halftime adjustment was to focus on one- and two-touch passing.

Hutnak knocked in the rebound of Mia Lambert’s shot to make it 4-1, capping Lambert’s determined run up the right sideline.

“On that fourth goal, we finally felt the momentum shift,” Hutnak said. “By that point, we picked up. Everyone was communicating, taking good touches and making the right runs.”

After a slow opening five minutes, Kennebunk (3-1-1) showed flashes of growth from a 3-11-1 season in 2013. Backs Caroline Hoch and Alyssa Weigle worked the ball into the midfield, where Elizabeth Cain’s sharp passing set up runs by forwards Cara McCluskey and Hallie Schwartzman.

“We both had chances. There wasn’t much of a difference (between teams),” Greely Coach Josh Muscadin said. “A couple times, we got very lucky in the first half. We were able to get a few opportunities and things just happened to go our way.”

Mitiguy and Hutnak combined for the Rangers’ opening goal 10 minutes in, when Hutnak slotted in Mitiguy’s low cross from the end line.

Kennebunk tied it 20 minutes later when Leah Dumas slipped a shot from 20 yards between the crossbar and the outstretched hands of keeper Maddie Cyr (seven saves).

Greely took the lead for good on Mitiguy’s direct kick from the right edge of the bubble. The play was set up when hard-charging keeper Kyra Schwartzman (16 saves) was called for a foul after she collided with Ellie Schad while running down a through ball. Mitiguy sent the ball to the lower left corner to make it 2-1.

“That’s a call you’re not going to see much,” Dolan said. “Mitiguy slid (the free kick) in and that was the beginning of the end. The nice thing is we have 13 games to go. We can roll over, or we can look in the mirror and decide what kind of team we want to be.”

Courtney Sullivan made it 3-1 in the final minute of the half, finishing another through ball.

Schad scored on a breakaway to make it 5-1 in the 54th minute, and Katherine Steinberg converted a corner kick four minutes later.

“We’re slowly starting to show signs we can contend,” Muscadin said. “We just need to keep climbing that ladder.”
