Cumberland should vote no on Question 2. Voting no will support the zoning laws already approved by our community. Harris Road is zoned as a rural residential district which “primarily allows agriculture, low-density residential and other low-density uses with the intent of maintaining significant amounts of open space and a generally rural character.” This zoning regulation is in line with the Comprehensive Plan. Maintaining the rural landscape of Harris Road, which is used by the entire community, as well as student athletes, for recreational activities is one reason why these zoning laws were established. Ignoring Cumberland’s zoning laws and allowing yet another development through contract zoning in exchange for an access road is not the answer. A no vote on Question 2 will support current zoning. A no on 2 is no to the creation of another “cut-through” community.
