OLD ORCHARD BEACH — On Tuesday, Ken and Missy Shupe will close the doors of Board Silly for good.

The game and puzzle store, located at 44 Old Orchard St., has been a fixture of downtown for about 10 years, open year-round in a town where many stores close for the winter season.

Owning the store year-round was almost like owning two different stores, said Missy, with mostly tourists coming in during the summer and hard-core puzzle and game enthusiasts coming in during the winter.

“If there’s a season for puzzles and games, it’s the winter months,” said Missy.

Missy and Ken are game buffs, and Missy said it’s been fun to share their interest with other people.

“We’ve enjoyed it, we met a lot of nice people,” said Ken.

The business will be missed, said Assistant Town Manager V. Louise Reid, in a prepared statement.

“They have been great business owners, and good friends to us all, and to many of the nonprofits in our community,” she said.

The Shupes will no longer have a brick-and-mortar store in Old Orchard Beach, but they’ll continue to live in town. They are “semi-retiring,” said Ken, and will be selling puzzles and games online at www.boardsillyonline.com.

The couple has no major plans, but intend to spend more time with family, said Missy.

“We’re going to let the dust settle, and enjoy life on the other side of the counter,” she said.
