CAPE ELIZABETH — Mariah Deschino scored in the second half as Cape Elizabeth shut out Yarmouth 1-0 in a Western Maine Conference girls’ soccer match Tuesday night.

“Yarmouth played great,” said Cape Elizabeth Coach Craig Fannon. “For the first time this season, my girls showed a little bit of grit and roughed out a win.

“I was so proud of how my girls stood up to (Yarmouth’s pressure), we were winning headers, we were winning tackles, we really wanted that win and the girls found that little bit extra.”

Yarmouth (3-3-1) outshot Cape Elizabeth 10-8, but was shut out for the second time in three games.

“A step here or there and we (would have) had three goals tonight so it’s just a matter of getting those steps when we need them,” said Yarmouth Coach Rich Smith. “Yeah I’m not worried, we just have to keep working, keep fighting through. As long as we stay positive and keep working through, we’ll be fine.”

Deschino scored 1:01 into the second half. Montana Braxton delivered a smooth pass to Deschino, who sent it into the left side of the net with her left foot.

“Three forwards helped to create (that play), Montana got the ball there and I had options,” said Deschino. “Everybody was there and I placed it. Got the goal.”

“She’s going to be a frightening forward for the next few years, so we’re excited,” said Fannon.

It was a tough break for Yarmouth which played a solid game despite that one mistake.

“We had a little mix-up at the start of the second half, just a little mix-up in formation and they capitalized,” said Smith. “(They) made a good play, got a breakaway, came in and scored.”

Senior goalkeeper Shannon Fallon kept Yarmouth in the game with five saves.

Tessa Goldstein notched a shutout for the Capers with four saves.

“She’s been outstanding,” said Fannon. “She made some big saves for us today, she was excellent.”
