BOSTON — Cal Clutterbuck scored the tie-breaking goal with 3:19 left in the third period, sending the New York Islanders to a 5-3 preseason win over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night.

Kyle Okposo, Cory Conacher and defenseman T.J. Brennan also scored for the Islanders.

Scott Mayfield added an empty-net goal.

Clutterbuck and Okposo each had an assist. Kevin Poulin made 26 saves for New York.

Starting goalie Niklas Svedberg stopped 7 of 8 shots for the Bruins. Jeremy Smith replaced Svedberg in the second period and allowed three goals on 18 shots.

Boston rallied from two goals down to tie it 3-all on goals by defenseman Matt Bartkowski and forward Brad Marchand early in the third. Patrice Bergeron also scored for the Bruins.

FLYERS 4, RANGERS 2: Wayne Simmonds scored in the second period, and Philadelphia beat visiting New York.

Sean Couturier scored in the first for Philadelphia, which lost 6-3 to the Rangers on Monday night. Ray Emery had 24 stops.

Carl Hagelin and rookie Anthony Duclair scored for New York. Cam Talbot stopped 19 of 22 shots in two periods of work.

NOTES

Panthers: Florida assigned reserve goaltender Dan Ellis to the team’s AHL affiliate in San Antonio.

The move means that, as expected, Al Montoya is set to begin the season as the backup to Florida starter Roberto Luongo.

Predators: Nashville signed restricted free agent forward Taylor Beck to a one-year, $550,000 deal.

Beck, 23, has played 23 career NHL games over the past two seasons with Nashville, and he has seven points.

Sabres: Forward Matt Ellis was among seven players Buffalo assigned to its AHL affiliate in Rochester, New York.

Ellis and defenseman Drew Bagnall, who was also demoted, must first clear waivers.

Also assigned to the minors were forwards Joel Armia, Buffalo’s 2011 first-round draft pick, and Tim Schaller, defenseman Nick Petrecki and goalies Nathan Lieuwen and Andrey Makarov.
