CAPE ELIZABETH — Michaela Pinette saved the best for last for the Cape Elizabeth field hockey team Wednesday night.

Pinette, a senior, scored her first career goal to help the Capers to a 2-0 victory against Falmouth on Senior Night.

Pinette broke a scoreless tie less than three minutes into the second half on a feed from Taylor Herrera.

“I just wanted to be really aggressive and I got a goal,” said Pinette, playing her second game as a forward after Coach Darci Holland switched her from center midfielder.

“Michaela plays with heart and soul, and I was looking for that spark on the front line,” said Holland. “I was looking for someone to pick up the intensity.”

Despite the loss, Falmouth (7-4) held a 9-4 shot advantage over Cape Elizabeth (6-5).

“I don’t think we got outplayed tonight, which maybe we did in the first game (a loss to Cape earlier this season)” said Falmouth Coach Robin Haley. “It just didn’t go our way tonight and sometimes that happens.”

Megan Nicholson put Cape Elizabeth up 2-0 with 14:57 remaining. Aubrey O’Meara fired a shot toward the net that was deflected, then finished off by Nicholson.

“We just played very well as a team tonight. I’m very proud of them,” said Holland. “To beat (Falmouth) twice in one season is huge for us.”

Following Cape Elizabeth’s second goal, Falmouth displayed a sense of urgency and elevated its intensity but was unable to score.

“It was close. We kept putting pressure on the goal and we couldn’t finish it off. But we were right in the fight,” said Haley.

“I’m very proud of the poise and composure (of my team) in a very physical game.”

Elle Fitzgerald played a strong game for the Yachtsmen in the loss.

“She played a great game; she had a lot of opportunities. It just didn’t go our way tonight,” said Haley.

One of those opportunities came off a corner with 6:22 remaining. Fitzgerald turned and fired a hard shot that whistled wide right. Two minutes later she had another chance on a deflection of a shot by Sydney Bell but put it wide left.

Falmouth appeared to avoid a shutout on a goal by Keunjoo Kim as time expired but it was waved off by the officials.

Mary DiPietro earned the shutout with nine saves.

“I can’t say enough good things about (DiPietro),” said Holland. “She knows the game of field hockey and commands her team very well.”
