CUMBERLAND — The Greely football team wasn’t at its best Thursday night but played well enough to earn its fourth consecutive victory.

Matt Pisini threw two touchdown passes to lead the Rangers to a 22-12 win against Kennebunk in a Western Class B game at Hutchins Field.

This was one of the three high school football games scheduled for Thursday night instead of Friday because of Yom Kippur, so both teams had one less day of practice.

“It was a short week,” Greely Coach David Higgins said. “We had a really emotional win over Westbrook last week and it was a short week, and it looked it. But we got a win and we can move on, which is really important to us.”

The game turned on two sensational plays by Pisini in the closing moments of the half.

After Greely (4-1) built a 14-0 lead, the Rams drove 56 yards in 15 plays to score their first touchdown with 44 seconds remaining in the half.

The Rangers needed just 22.3 seconds to answer.

On the second play following the kickoff, Pisini scampered 25 yards to the Kennebunk 45. On the next play he threw a scoring pass to Nick Dubois.

“It hurts to give up a score like that near the end of the first half,” Kennebunk Coach Joe Rafferty said. “It’s like a dagger to the heart.”

Greely took a 6-0 lead with less than three minutes left in the first quarter when Pisini threw a 33-yard pass to Andrew Verrill to cap a six-play, 54-yard drive.

On a fourth-down play at the Kennebunk 6, Pisini went 2 yards up the middle on a keeper to keep the drive alive.

The Rangers made it 14-0 less than seven minutes into the second quarter when Sam Peck went up the middle 4 yards for a touchdown three plays after defensive tackle Paul Buchanan recovered a fumble at the Kennebunk 19.

With 44.9 seconds left in the half, the Rams made it 14-6 when Donovan Connor threw a 5-yard scoring pass to Liam Strong.

Statistically, Greely held a sizeable edge.

The Rangers held a 15-9 edge in first downs. Greely also compiled 309 yards of total offense, while the Rams (1-4) churned out 223 yards, mostly on the ground.

“The first half I thought we played really well as a team,” Higgins said.

“The second half we just didn’t play as well for a variety of reasons. We’ll watch film and see what’s going on.”

The Rangers turned the ball over twice during the second half, and one of the turnovers enabled Kennebunk to close the scoring gap.

With less than five minutes left in the game, the Rams completed the scoring when Harrison Vosburgh plunged in from the 2 on a fourth-down play to cap a 10-play, 52-yard drive after defensive end Shane Normandeau recovered a fumbled exchange on his 48. Defensive lineman Ryan Pomeroy then sacked Connor on the 2-point conversion attempt to keep Greely’s lead at 10 points.

Kennebunk got one more possession but turned the ball over on downs at the Greely 27 with 40 seconds left.

“We’re improving,” Rafferty said. “We’re just not over the hump yet and we’ve just got to keep working.”
