The University of Maine men’s hockey team dropped its season opener, 3-1, to Alaska-Anchorage early Saturday in Anchorage.
Dan Renouf scored for the Black Bears, tying the game in the first period just one second after a Maine power play ended. Blaine Byron and Conor Riley assisted on the goal.
Maine goalie Matt Morris made 26 saves in the loss. Scott Allen, Austin Azurdia and Hudson Friesen scored for the Seawolves (1-0).
The Black Bears face Alaska-Fairbanks Saturday at 8 p.m. Eastern time in Anchorage.
FIELD HOCKEY
MAINE 3, FAIRFIELD 1:
The Black Bears scored three unanswered goals to come from behind and earn a 3-1 field hockey win Friday over Fairfield at Orono.
Down 1-0, Maine (7-6, 2-0 America East) knotted it as Holly Stewart tipped in a shot from Katie Bingle on the right side. Jessica Skillings gave the Black Bears the lead for good with her first goal of the season in the 23rd minute, as she converted a Hannah Keating pass in the circle to make it 2-1. Annabelle Hamilton tallied an insurance goal in the second half.
Emma Cochran made nine saves on 10 shots for Maine.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
ST. JOSEPH’S 3, NORWICH 0: Hannah LeBlanc, Kim Jordan and Sam Peters each scored for St. Joseph’s (7-6-1, 4-2-1 GNAC) in the first half to stake the Monks to an early lead over the Cadets (2-8-1, 0-6-1) at Northfield, Vermont.
Brooke Troup and Marina Cameron combined for two saves and the shutout for the Monks. Molly Miller of Raymond had four saves for Norwich and Holly Lutz added three.

NORWICH 3, ST. JOSEPH’S 1: Christian Albrecht scored an unassisted goal in the 51st minute for the eventual game-winner as the Cadets (10-3-1, 4-0-1 GNAC) beat the Monks (3-12-0, 1-4-0) at Northfield, Vermont.
St. Joseph’s scored its goal when Austin Bell converted an assist from Yanni Rakis.
Scott Benner had three saves for St. Joseph’s.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
MERCYHURST 1, MAINE 0: Mercyhurst (3-0) edged the Black Bears (2-2) in Orono, despite 41 saves by Maine goalie Meghann Treacy.
Amanda Makela registered 25 saves for Mercyhurst.
FOOTBALL
NOTRE DAME: Junior cornerback KeiVarae Russell, one of five players suspended in an academic fraud investigation, will not play for the Irish this season but will return to the team in 2015, Russell said on Instagram Friday.
Russell said he “most likely” will be suspended academically for the spring semester but plans to return in June.
