Falmouth voters will have the opportunity Nov. 4 to vote on a referendum authorizing the town to issue up to $2.81 million in bonds to pay for half the cost of expanding the library, with a tax impact of about $32 per year on a home assessed at $400,000. The library trustees are committed to fundraising the remaining half of the project costs.

Library trustees, community members and experts spent hundreds of hours evaluating the “right size” library. The design reflects their recommendations and is consistent with state standards.

New technologies have changed some of the ways patrons use the library, but haven’t decreased the library’s use.

The library served more patrons and circulated more materials in 2013 than a decade earlier. Just as library uses have evolved, the space likewise needs to reflect modern needs.

I urge all Falmouth residents to vote in favor of the library.
