An Aroostook County man was shot and killed Sunday by a Maine State Police trooper in an armed confrontation in the Aroostook County town of Ludlow.

Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said Sgt. Joshua Haines shot and killed Alan Gillotti Sr., 52, of Ludlow on Sunday afternoon outside his home on the Smyrna Townline Road.

McCausland said Haines and other troopers had gone to Gillotti’s home as part of an investigation into an armed home invasion that had taken place in the town of Bridgewater earlier in the day.

McCausland did not have many details Sunday night about the home invasion, but he said it involved two men. No serious injuries were reported.

Haines has been placed on administrative leave with pay, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

According to the Maine Attorney General’s Office, there have been nine officer-involved shootings in Maine this year.

Five of those shootings have resulted in fatalities.
